Custom Cross Pendant

I have been wanting to make a cross in my Byzantium style and yesterday I finally got the opportunity. It was my turn working as "shop girl" as my part of being a member of a Co-op gallery, Port City Pottery and Fine Crafts. After a long day of restocking my work, making sales and wrapping packages, a customer came in and asked if I made any crosses. I didn't, at least not yet.....

I have had one in mind for a long time, but custom orders tend to take priority over creating new work. So these crosses never got made. I tried to guide him to other jewelry shops in the Cotton Exchange, but they didn't have what he had in mind. I decided that this would force me to make a piece that I've been wanting to do for 2 years. So I asked his price range and I it was enough for what I had in mind. I sketched what I have been thinking about for so long and I was excited when he liked it too.

Tonight my customer picked it up and was thankful that I made it so quickly. It was just what I needed to get this piece out of my imagination. I got to meet his sister when he visited the Cotton Exchange and I loved talking to her about goats and kale. It is very rewarding to do something that is so meaningful. I just knew it was the right thing to do.

I have a heart full of gratitude and joy as I pack up three sets of wedding rings ready in time for Christmas. I am so grateful for my customers--that you trust me to make rings for your special day. I am excited to complete two more custom orders to arrive in time for Christmas-each one of these are pieces that I will enjoy making.

I go on and on about this because on December 21st I'm going to have surgery. I have another herniated disk--this time in my neck. I will be so relieved to be out of the intense pain that I've been suffering with for the past 2 months. I have been able to work due to the double blessing and curse of strong painkillers. Apparently this is a common injury for someone who hunches over a workbench. (Insert here a plug for good posture! ha!).

This injury has forced me to do things differently. I need to learn to take time for myself and to not push myself. I will have to change the way I run my business and I might have to rely more on online and custom orders. I do love to do retail, because I love to meet and talk to my customers. All of this thinking has made me realize how grateful I am for my loyal customers. I really do have the best customers in the whole world. To all my customers, I thank you for a wonderful year and I look forward to a beautiful New Year!

Home for a few weeks...

I am home for a few weeks after an intense marathon of doing four back to back Art Shows. I do enjoy meeting all my customers and seeing their faces light up when they find the right piece.

ART SHOW Highlights:

At TACA in Nashville, Tennessee I met a woman who commissioned me to work with her on designing her wedding band with diamonds from her family. We decided on a tidal pool type of ring with a wide band with the diamonds set in rose gold. I am so excited to begin work on this.

At the St. James 4th Street Art show in Louisville (where I won an honorable mention prize), I met a lovely woman and cancer survivor and who unbeknownst to her just happens to be my new muse. (insert a smile here) She has incredible creative energy and I immediately connected with her and her daughter. She bought a hammered organic circle pendant with a champagne diamond in an 18k gold bezel. My mother and sister live in Louisville, so it was nice to get to visit them.

In Waynesboro, VA at the Fall Foliage Art Show I was thrilled to win 1st prize in the jewelry category. Its wonderful validation when your work gets recognized in a public way. Plus prize money is always a bonus! I don't know who does it, but the kettle corn popcorn at the show was the biggest and fluffiest I have ever tasted.

Stockley Gardens Art Show in Norfolk, VA was a great show and I got to room with fellow jeweler, Dolores Fawkes and her sister Pauline, who specializes in lampwork beads. The Virginia shows are closer for me to do than the Asheville NC shows, so I'll be looking for more shows in that area.

Now that I am home, I have taken my art show pieces and have them for sale at Port City Pottery and Fine Crafts located in the Cotton Exchange, Wilmington, NC. If you are in the area, stop by to see my larger pieces of work. On Tuesdays, I work in the gallery as well--so feel free to come by and say hello! Now I will have to get to work on my commissions. :D

Ring A Day Book by Lark Books!

I just got back from doing two back to back art shows, and was so thrilled to open a package with my "Ring a Day" book inside! "Ring a Day" is a beautiful book full of images from cover to cover. With its field guide type of feel, this book is brilliantly edited by Marthe Le Van and demonstrates the project's breadth and endless variety of rings. Some rings are novel, some are funny, some beautiful, some challenge practical notions of what is a ring.

For the reader--it is a book of inspiration, imagination, and a visual snap shot of the creative process. For me, it is eye candy. I have several rings in the books as well--so I'm slightly inclined to be in love with this book!!! Enjoy and be inspired!

I was thrilled to do a commission for my dear friend for a "Mother's Necklace". I really wanted to work in a silver/blue palate. I used the birthstones for each month of all the children. The top gemstone is an Australian bi-color Sapphire for September--it looks like aqua with some flashes of green. Small bi-color stones when they are set typically flash back one color with lively flashes of the other color. The square middle stone is a raw diamond for the month of April. I was thrilled to use cut and raw stones in this piece. The bright blue cabochon on the bottom is a Boulder Opal for October.

The silver is hand cut with a jeweler's saw and is from my Roman Ruins collection. This was one of my first ideas that I continue to explore. I didn't have words when I first did it, but one day I was describing it to a customer and then I realized how personal this design was.

My life so far has not gone in the direction that I planned after graduation from my Master's Program in Voice Performance. I had planned on making a career by singing art song and opera. I got married just after graduation, and truth be told for many of the wrong reasons, but mostly because I was scared to be on my own. After 4 years my marriage dissolved--but I have a beautiful daughter from it who is the love of my life.

I was 30 and a divorced single mother. Not the way I had planned it at all! I had no singing career and was working 3 part time jobs to make ends meet. As fate would have it, I met my current husband and soul mate not long after my divorce.

We married and I began to work at the community college teaching voice lessons. I began to dabble in making jewelry as a hobby. In a year we had a new baby boy and adopted my 10 year old niece. So my family went from 3 to 5 nearly overnight. I took the next big leap and decided to stay at home with my son and make extra income by making jewelry. I just kept on making and making and working the business.

Six years later, I am incredibly blessed with 3 children, a loving and supportive husband and a career.

For me this piece is about celebrating beauty in our brokenness, wrong turns, and twisted paths. It is about acceptance and trusting in my higher power. I am on a path to live as beautifully as I can. At moments I get glimpses of incredible love, beauty and peace. This would have not been possible if I had not made my "wrong turns". So I celebrate the duality of my life--the good and the bad. It is through being a jeweler that I became a whole person again.

I have been busy making custom pieces this week. This square band is typically part of my wedding set, but I wanted to add a champagne diamond to make it stand alone.

It makes me think about making more jewelry for Men. It is very heavy with a hammered and brushed texture.

This weeks Project Runway challenge was the Pet store challenge. Initially I have to confess that I was not excited about it--sometimes I doubt my ability to manipulate unusual materials. When I saw this dog bone--then I was excited! I was thrilled with how it turned out! I took a rubber dog bone and cut it with my jewelers saw. I connected them with a rust resistant steel wire I got at Harbor Freight. (I bought a pound of it for $5--that's how it was packaged too!)

I may even keep this piece. I made earrings to match--but its a bit busy with the necklace. They touch.

Project Runway 9 "Come as You Are" Episode 1

I took this Project Runway Challenge as an opportunity to examine my bench--which is quite messy at the best of times. As I searched for scrap silver on my bench, I cleaned as I went along. Once I found enough silver, I melted the scrap and then rolled it out in my rolling mill. I loved how my blob of cooled molten silver turned into an organic freeform shape. I knew what I wanted to do next. I heated the surface to produce a partial reticulation, which in turn created texture. The hole in the middle naturally formed when I rolled it out.

Art Fair on the Square

I am absolutely thrilled to be invited to be a part of Art Fair on the Square in Madison, WI this coming weekend. (July 9-10) Its a far drive, but I think that the trip will be worth it. I have never been to Madison, and I'm anxious to visit. I hope that if you live nearby that you will stop by and see my work! I'm booth 351, just in case.

Tonight I'm in the studio finishing up some custom pieces. I always get nervous before a show and the best way I know to combat my nerves is to keep busy. Its quiet in the house and everyone is asleep. Pretty soon, I'll sleep too.

I feel such joy and hope when I think about this show. I'm excited to see what adventures lie ahead! See you at the Fair!

Seven First Finger Rings

I have always had a difficult time with my bezels. Today I took my time and didn't rush any of the sanding or measuring. The extra time I took at the beginning saved me much more time in the end.

This weekend I'll be showing at the Southport NC 4th of July Festival on Franklin Square. Next weekend (July 9-10), I'll be in Madison, Wisconsin for Art Fair on the Square.

After my back surgery at the end of February and my burnout from last fall, I took some time off all my online communications and re-connected with my family, did physical therapy for my back, and am slowly but surely getting back into the studio! My husband Hans built this lovely pergola and Tuscan style dining table for our backyard. He is training grape vines to grow up the supports. Its been lovely having this time off, but I'm ready to get back into the studio!

I have been working on a new way to set stones. The new "Jagged" collection will premiere at the Fourth Friday gallery opening Friday, January 28th at Port City Pottery. Louise Giordano and I will be the featured artists for February, so we are bringing in all new work. Louise and I will be donating a portion of the proceeds of our work at Port City Pottery for the month of February to the American Heart Association.

I find that after the big holiday rush, I have some time where I reflect about my year's accomplishments. This year was much busier than most years for me and I felt that many of my endeavors did not work out as I had hoped. Also I'm getting older and I have a need inside me to give back to my fellow human. I feel that one of the main reasons we are here in earth is to give back to our fellow humans and to help those in need. And I believe that we only get to keep what we freely give away.

I decided that I would start a team on Kiva (microlending for 3rd world entrepreneurs) and invite all of my fellow metalsmiths to join. You do not need to be in etsy or etsy metal to participate. I have been in love with Shannon Conrad's (aka rubygirl) handcast "Lego" rings for some time! It just so happened that she was my EtsyMetal Secret Santa. I love the flush set stone in the corner. I have had such a wonderful Christmas and this Secret Santa definitely made me smile.

I didn't post earlier because I was such a dork and tried to shove this on my middle finger. (not the finger it was sized for either) I couldn't take pictures because my finger was all red and swollen. I drank lots of water and got my hands cold before I attempted to take it off again two days later. Good thing that I can laugh at how silly I can be....sigh.

I think I have the same level of impulse control as my 4 year old.

A Stone Setting Story

Many of you know that my husband Hans has been learning lapidary, which is the art of cutting stones. He has been cutting cabochons--the smooth rounded stones--for about a year and has been faceting stones for about 6 months. He is very anxious for me to set his stones. I have put it off as long as possible. I have not really set many fancy cut gemstones, so I admit that I am a bit intimated. This weekend I decided to tackle them. I have a show coming up this weekend and I figured that I needed lots of bling!

This "morganite" cubic zirconia is cut from a pattern designed by Jeff Graham called "White Asterism". It weighs 12 carats. The pattern boasts 72.6 in light return with a mere 73 facets in 6-fold mirror-image symmetry. (I looked that up on the pattern page.)

Here's what I did:
I used 3 shanks of 16 gauge wire about 3 inches long and then notched them in the middle with a file. I bent them in half and arranged them so that they were equidistant from each other and soldered the center together. Then I gently bent the arms from my 6 sided wire snowflake shape over my "rings" and soldered them to 2 large jumprings--one at a time. (this made a little cage--can't wait to explore that idea too!) All solder was done with hard solder. I trimmed off the centerpiece where they were soldered at the bottom and filed it. Next I cut the top prongs to the correct height. I rounded the prong tips and notched them with a little hand tool made specifically for that purpose.

So far I'm really pleased and feel that I'm finding a definitive style by using these bigger, flashier stones. So my darling Hans, I just ordered you some more rough gemstone. :D

Kind of sounds silly, but I was really intimidated to do a brooch. I think its because in order to have a sturdy back you can't use sterling wire to make the "pin" stick part. I have many sketches for brooch/pendant combination pieces, so I'm excited that I've crossed over the threshold. Now everything my be brooches!

My First Publication

I was so giddy last week when I saw a yellow bubble mailer from Lark Books. I had a hunch that it would be this book!!!! I opened it up and looked inside to see my first piece of jewelry in print. Being included in this book has quite literally changed my life.

In the Spring of 2009, I received an email from Lark Books inviting me to participate in this project. I was confused. At that time I had only been metalsmithing for a little over 2 years--having received my first torch as a present from my sweet husband, Hans for Christmas 2006. My maiden name was Graham and I was immediately terrified that they had mixed me up with a well-known (and famous) metalsmith--Sarah Graham. I consulted with a few friends and then I mustered up the courage to call Lark Books. I explained that they made a mistake and that I probably wasn't the person that they wanted, plus I was entirely self-taught. The Lark representative, Amanda Caresto, laughed good-naturedly and assured me that Marthe Le Van did not make a mistake and wanted me to be involved in this project.

Many of you know that I'm a classically trained opera singer with a master's in voice performance. I had struggled with my life's twists and turns and had really felt like a failure because I chose not to pursue a career and to be a Mom. I had frequent nightmares of being a failure. While I love being a mom, my artistic and ambitious impulses fought to get out. I turned to metalsmithing as a hobby to soothe my pent up frustration. I read every book I could get my hands on and every weekend, I would challenge myself to learn a new technique. I believed that if I had done a technique 100 times, then I owned that skill.

After the birth of my second child in 2006, I adopted my 10 year old niece. I went from one child to three quite literally overnight. I had to make more money, so began to sell my jewelry at church festivals and local craft fairs. It was impossible for me to teach more students because my voice would wear out, but I could make jewelry all night long while everyone slept. I had always wanted to make jewelry, but never knew about "art" jewelry. Now I can't imagine not making jewelry!!!

I want to thank Marthe Le Van and Linda Kopp for believing in me and for allowing me to be in this book. This validation happened at such a key moment in my life and has transformed me as an artist. I also thank my husband and my niece for all their help that allowed me time to work. I want to thank Karen Schoon who has always believed in me and who has been like a second mother to me. I am grateful for my Mom and Dad who have always been there for me. I only wish that my Dad had lived long enough to see me be an artist. And I thank all the people who have purchased my work. I feel so blessed and I am full of joy.

Today I received a very special surprise from Experimetal (aka Victoria Takahashi). Inside the box were these little packages. Just as I was getting ready to rip them all open, I spied a note with the "rules".

"If you open a package you have to use it, OR use it for inspiration and make a piece within 24 hours.

NO PEEKING! (Fondling counts as peeking)"

So, I decided that I could handle one little challenge before my trip to Seattle tomorrow, so I selected one in the middle of the bag and opened it up. I found this gorgeous rock with the natural hole already in it. I loved the shape and wanted to play with it as a ring.

I've decided to call them my "inspiration packages".

It was an idea that Kathryn Riechert began when she sent a package to Victoria. Its very fun and playful. I feel like a kid again--caught up in my play.

My mother in law is one of the most amazing violin teachers I've ever met. She teaches kids in a "Suzuki" method. When kids ask how often they should practice, Dr. Suzuki's answer is that you only have to practice on the days you eat. In this tradition they also do a song 10,000 times before that song is mastered.

As a musician myself, I apply a daily discipline to my metalsmithing. I often challenge myself to try something new. Trying it once is not enough, getting it right once is not enough, so I relentlessly pursue it until it becomes a part of me. I think that there is some magic with number 10,000.

Yep, 10,000 of anyone thing is a lot of doing. This ring reminds me that I have to work at my art "only the days you eat".

"Craft Corps" by Vickie Howell

I am addicted to people's life stories and especially their successes. I normally do most of my reading via audio books when I'm traveling, but I've come across a book that has made me want to sit down and study it! "Craft Corps" by Vickie Howell published by Lark Books is a colorful and engaging book about the lives of hundreds of crafters. The tag line says it all, "Documenting the Crafting Revolution" with "celebrity interviews, profiles of everyday crafters, and tales of making a creative life." I am fascinated with the grassroots community and their overabundant dose of Do-It-Yourself combined with ingenuity. I love that this book instantly captures my attention and makes me want to read more. I think that you will love it too!

EtsyMetal Ring a Day SNAG Exhibit Announcement

Colleen Baran's 1/365 Ring a Day

EtsyMetal is pleased to announce that the Ring a Day Project has been accepted as an exhibit for the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) upcoming Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington. The EtsyMetal team has partnered with the PUNCH Gallery for this exhibit. “RAD, a Ring a Day for 365 days” curated by Colleen Baran, Shannon Conrad and Sara Westermark will run from Thursday, May 5 to Sunday, May 29, 2011.

Represented work will range from ephemeral and conceptual art rings to functional jewelry. The exhibit will feature 365 rings, representing a ring a day and encompassing the full span of the year. The layout will also include photographic documentation of select temporary and conceptual art rings. Rings will be chosen by the EtsyMetal curators and will illustrate the highlights and accomplishments of many hundreds of international members, selected from over 10,000 rings.

Victoria Takahashi's 100/365 Ring a Day

The Ring a Day project (or RAD) is an open challenge to metalsmiths and other artists across the globe to make one ring a day, out of any material, for the entire year of 2010. The genesis of the Ring a Day project is based on an exercise taught by Ellen Wieske at Haystack. The Flickr project, which was initially proposed by Nina Dinoff, was intended as an EtsyMetal team challenge to set a daily routine of exploration and an experiment to see what could develop over the course of a year.

On a daily basis, the rings are created, photographed, and posted to the Ring a Day Flickr photo group by each participant. The majority of the artists represented here have discovered this project through social media networks such as Flickr, EtsyMetal, Etsy, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and of course word of mouth. This project reflects a population of metalsmiths and jewelry makers who are facile with current online technology.

My fingers are still aching from setting all the teeny tiny bezels, but it is work that I welcome. I am so grateful today that I can work, that I have many ideas that i want to explore, that I have ambition to move forward with excitement in the future. I am currently exploring a more "fine" jewelry style that I find intensely rewarding.

Yesterday I did something that I rarely do--I took a long nap. I let my mind wander around and draw and plan in peace and leisure. I felt in touch with my higher power and was serene.

These earrings are part of a new line which I call Byzantium. It combines influences from the ancient Roman and Byzantium styles with modern lines. Yes, the labradorite are really that lovely too!

Maggie J's "falling leaf earrings"

This weekend I'm traveling to Asheville to participate in The Big Crafty at Pack Square. I'll be outside, so if you are in the area please look for me! It was such a fun show last year--I'm really looking forward to it again.

Lark Books has a really cool blog and included my etsy store front in their blog post about the event. I have many new things to show you and I'm thrilled to feature my "lily pad & reed" series.

I'm organizing my life at the moment and if I get a second wind, I might make something special for the show! I'll travel to the western side of the state and stay with my friend Maggie, who will also do the show. (Maggie will be set up inside and upstairs in the Asheville Art Museum.)

I love to travel to see my friend and to have a show. Its work, but its so much fun that it doesn't feel like work! I hope that if you live nearby, you will come and see us! (me and maggie, that is!)

I recently ordered some new stamps specifically to mark the inside shank of rings. The stamp shanks are bent and the face of the stamp is slightly curved so that it will be able to stamp the inside of a ring. They work really well on flat sheet, but I have yet to try them on a curved surface. (the first stamp is missing the first and last letters because of the curved shape) Vincent at Spark's Stamps in Long Island, NY hand tooled these stamps and shipped them to me very fast. Both places do high quality hand-tooled stamps at a very reasonable price. These stamps range in price from $80-$105.

While I was at SNAG this year in Houston, I got to talk with Tim McCreight about new technologies to aid metalsmiths. I was really excited to see how forward thinking he was and how readily he embraced technology. He mentioned that he was working on an iphone app relevant to metalsmiths. While poking around on facebook this morning, I saw the announcement of this new app, entitled Metalsmith Suite. It is only $3.99 for the first 50 who sign up. The program has nine calculation programs and three additional information resources. I linked each calculation and information resource with the Brynmorgen information sheet that includes screen shots of the program.

The nine calculation programs are:

cost of shot, cost of sheet, cost of wire, casting needs, drawing length, tubing blanks, metal conversion, gold alloying, equivalent numbers

The three additional resources:

metal properties, gem properties and instructions.

I have downloaded the app, but I have yet to install it to my iphone. I have lost the cord to sync it with my computer. (I suspect my husband has hidden it from me--not true, but since he is the true techie in the household, he does hide stuff so I don't lose it. He will have to fix it! :D)

It was lovely to have a show last weekend in Charleston, SC for the Piccolo-Spoletto Festival. I love the old downtown and the fabulous new (but kinda scary at night) bridge. The show organizers were so good to the vendors and supplied us with lots of water and gatorade. On Sunday, they even organized a gourmet brunch for all the vendors and volunteers. With all the talented artists showing their work, I was fortunate enough to get "Honorable Mention."

This week I've been working on some new pieces to take with me to my show in Richmond, VA on June 12th and 13th. The show is called "Art Awards" and will be held at the Richmond, VA Raceway.

I'm thrilled that my oldest daughter loves to travel with me. She is getting the hang of selling and its fun to see her engage the customers. She is charming and knows my work. I remember how much I loved to travel with my father to help him with his antique shows. It was a chance to see the world and to meet new people.

May 4th UPS reported that they left a package at the front door of my former address. I was in the middle of moving to our new house and neglected to contact the publisher to correct the address. I guess I thought that the address change was all we needed--but that only works for USPS and not UPS. (It is my fault for not updating my address, but I was so overwhelmed with the whole moving process).

Roman Ruins was a piece that I made for a publication to be released this coming October. I am offering a $200 reward for anyone who returns it to me--no questions asked. just reply to this blog post. The photo is a sketch of piece. This is my first piece to be published and I'm very sentimental about it.

My neighbors have not seen it and the new owners have not seen it either. When it was delivered, the new owners were not living there yet. I would be overjoyed to find this piece.

I had so much fun piercing with my new saw. It is so easy to handle and makes piercing a dream. I didn't even mind sawing some tubing! This is my Ring a Day for today the 81st day of the New Year. I drilled a hole and then inserted my saw blade with my Knew Concept say and made all my cracks. I really love it when you have a tool and it makes something tedious into something fun and meditative.

SNAG Tool Review Continued--Micro Forming Tools

I was enchanted by the tools offered by N. C. Black Co in the vendor room at the Society of North American Goldsmith's conference. N. C. Black Co. specializes in micro forming tools for shell forming, raising, and spiculums by offering a full range of hammers, mallets, stakes and forming blocks for metalsmiths.

These tools are available only at ALLCRAFT TOOL Co. and are 100% made in the United States. I couldn't find a website address for Allcraft, but I do have a phone number to call for the tools, (212) 279-7077. People were constantly at the booth trying out various hammers. I don't remember a time when they had an empty booth!

They also had handouts available to show how each hammer was used to create these different micro forms. I decided in the interest of time that I would visit them after I get home since they are located in North Carolina. I am planning to travel to the Sawtooth School to get a lesson on these beautiful tools.

During the SNAG conference I frequented the vendors' rooms and keep looking at tools. When I get home I will order the 2 of the red saws from Rio Grande. I used it on my ring a day project while I was here. It cuts better and is lighter than anything I've ever used before. I also enjoyed trying out the textured hammer on the "stool stump" with a huge anvil. For me the red saw is a must have tool. (Knew Concept Jeweler's Saw in 3", 5" and 8"). I got to meet Bill Fretz and ask many questions about his line of hammers and stakes. I am interested in looking into the ring doming set of bench stakes. Mark Nelson is the Rio employee who is on the youtube instruction videos, (most recently in the video on using the swantstrom cutter to make a seamless ring) recommended some tools for me to add to my "want" list. He suggested a hammer handpiece 15-D for setting cabs and a Bench Mate kit. I hope my husband reads this because my birthday is at the end of this month!

I also liked the layout of the Rio sales booth, it was easy to see the tools and benches were available to watch people work. The folks at Rio were helpful, easy going and nice to talk to, plus they are great dancers! (I had no idea that so many people would dance! Many danced until the DJ finished). They are truly committed to service and that really shows.

I am going to sort out my finances and save up for a Potter hydrolic press from Otto Frei. I got to meet the maker, Kevin Potter and makes his own presses and die plates. On the way to the conference I studied Susan Kinsley's Book on Hydrolic Die Forming. (You can still buy it on Amazon from the author for the original list price). SNAG Exhibition in Motion

My first SNAG conference has been quite a whirlwind of activity. There is something to do everyday. The lectures have been excellent and I'm thrilled to keep learning. I've gotten to meet some of my metalsmithing hero's like Tim McCreight and Andy Cooperman. Last night was the SNAG fashion show at the Houston Museum of Art. I was thrilled to participate in it and documented Marthe Le Van's transformation from a book editor to avant garde fashion model.

The artist I represented is Erica Stankwych Bailey. She lives in Fayetteville, North Carolina and drove down to my house to deliver her piece titled, "unwanted". It is made of junk mail and the color is from the original colors of the paper. She used recycled copper from construction sites to create links.

I give credit to all the designers as soon as I locate that bulletin.

I wanted to make a donation piece that reflected my work and my love of Classical Music. I keep trying to make them be "real" instruments by making some sound. This time I used steel strings and a sounding board, but without adjustable pins, I don't think I can tighten the strings enough to make a sound.

I'll keep trying--eventually I figure out a way to make pins that are adjustable.

Tomorrow morning I take a 7 am flight to Houston to attend my very first SNAG (Society of North American Goldsmiths) Conference. One of the first things done at this conference is the legendary "pin swap". Its a meet and greet event in which the members trade pins that they have made. I made over 50 pins out of copper, sterling pin backs and large fresh water pearls. I'm really excited, nervous and nearly ready to go.

I'm torn with leaving my family. At first it sounded like a really great Mom only vacation, but now I'm getting a bit anxious that I will miss them terribly. Of course they will get along fine without me for a few days. (I'm going to keep telling myself that!).

One highlight for me is that I get to wear Erica Stankwytch Bailey's extraordinary recycled junk mail necklace. It is spectacular. I will try to post pictures while I'm out there.

I'm working on a new series different from gemstone stacking rings because these rings contain different aspects of my work. I was very much inspired by Tomi of Metal Riot and have asked her permission to develop this idea in my voice. Her new "Elements" series is really amazing and reminds me of an organic architecture. I will incorporate my tidal pools series, roe, with different faceted and bezel set stones. I really look forward to seeing where this will go! I'm having a lot of fun doing it!

Last Wednesday I got a call from Lark Books requesting some photos for an upcoming press release to announce a "call for submissions" for their latest 30-Minute Ring Book. I was thrilled to let them use photos of my work and very humbled as well.

I don't know about you, but I have to work quickly to get things done in the studio. I have a family of three with my youngest still at home, so needless to say, I've been working with mastering the 30-minute challenge!

Since the beginning of the year a group of international artists have been participating in a project to create one ring a day for 365 days of 2010. We have abbreviated our "Ring a Day" title to simply "RAD." We post our work on flicker in a "Ring a Day" group.

So after 31 days of straight ring making and 228 members, I had to pick one, only one favorite ring to blog on for the blog carnival. There were so many rings that I wanted to pick as my favorite ring of the day, but this one by Victoria Takahashi of Experimetal, really left an impact on me. This ring is so perfect to me in many ways. To begin with it is visually appealing in its industrial setting. I can't help but to see a bit of the 1980's version of "Superman" here. Perhaps the fond nostalgia I have at seeing "Superman" with Christopher Reeves on the screen for the first time as a young girl impacts this decision. Nonetheless, It is brilliant how Experimetal anchored the beads in this setting and then echoed the crystal towers look in the setting with the strips of sterling on the sides. Sometimes my head spins when I see another one of her pieces. She has a vision and endless creativity that I admire. To me, and she would hate that I would say this, is one of the most talented metalsmiths I know. Her work is cohesive, skillful, playful, and is distinctly hers. I hated to pick just one ring from all the other smiths out there, but there is something in this piece and in her body of work as a whole that really resonates with me. Okay for just one day I want you to meet my brave 3.5 lb Chihuahua. Chilli is the sweetest and fiercest dog ever. He is at my feet or in my lap as I work. When I sleep he is nestled down under the covers behind my knees. Lately he has taken to curling up in my plastic storage boxes scattered around at my feet. He sings when I teach voice lessons and he barks long and loud when anyone comes to the door. He is a bit pampered and has to be hand-fed. Graham my 3 year old does a great job at giving Chilli the best part of his dinner. He is often overshadowed by my love for cats, but I would really miss his constant presence. He has a sweet face and it always looking for warm lap.

I've really loved participating in this challenge. They say that a habit is not truly formed until you have been doing it 21 days. These self-imposed limitations help me to work. Everyday I'm inspired to see what my friends make. I'm the kind of person who won't go workout unless I have to meet my friend there too! This challenge makes it fun and I feel that all my friends are there plucking bits out of the collective consciousness. I really wanted something that would allow me to be creative a little bit every day. So far I'm not selling my collection yet, but I can remake most of these for anyone who just has to have one!!! At first I was going to work on a fold-formed leaf curling, but I overworked the metal and it split in two. I have learned that sometimes the "mistakes" become "happy accidents". I decided to go with this and make my leaf pendant into two earrings. I like the way it turned out better than what I planned! Here's my haiku:

Last night Hans cut a beautiful stone for me and wanted me to use it right away, so I set it in this coral type setting. It has smoky topaz, brandy citrine, mandarin garnet, garnet, ruby and one big native cut zircon. I'll take it to the Rock and Shop Market tomorrow in Raleigh, NC. I'm in full swing making custom orders, sending out packages and delivering inventory to local galleries. Its busy, busy, busy-- but I've made time to remember to spend time with my family. Yesterday I took my voice students out caroling at the Cotton Exchange in downtown Wilmington and my husband took some great pictures of my wild crew! It makes me happy to see my kids so joyful. We couldn't get a nice "posed" sit down picture, so we just picked one that showed off their personalities. Wild boy, silly girl and camera shy teenager! Last night we make toffee. I'm famous for making my coffee toffee! Today we will make my Grandma Delores's sugar cookies from a recipe that came from my Great Aunt Ida. They are the absolutely best sugar cookies in the world! Very hard to just eat one.

This is probably the first Christmas that I've really felt like celebrating since my father died 5 years ago. Christmas was his deal. He went all out--made cookies, Christmas dinner, bought too many gifts, and was so joyful. Now I can finally continue on the traditions with my own family. It feels real this year.

If I was forced to pick only one of my most favorite Jewelry memories, it would be participating in our Etsymetal Jewelry Challenges this past Fall. These challenges were directly inspired by Lifetime's Project Runway with our very own Vic Takahasi from Experimetal managing the project. These challenges really helped me pursue new directions. This Sunday I'll participate as a vendor at the Big Crafty at the Asheville Art Museum from 12pm to 6pm. I'm really excited because this is my first time doing this show and I get to go and see Maggie too. As part of a fundraiser for the Big Crafty, I made a belt buckle and donated it. The "Organic Leaf Belt Buckle" will be auctioned at the show.

I'll also get to meet some of the folks from Lark Books! I'll be included in two Lark books for next fall and I'm absolutely thrilled.

I had fun working on the final collections for the Etsy Metal version of Project Runway. This is just one of the four pieces that I did for the collection. The flash of the labradorite is really bright in this cabochon that Hans cut. He is really getting the hang of cutting this stone in a way so that he doesn't lose the flash. It was a deep set stone and I wanted to show as much of it as possible, so I did a bezel with prongs. This way lots of light will still come in the stone.

All art work is between $25-$250 and there will be over 200 local and regional artists there. Our final Etsymetal Jewelry Challenge was to take piece from the Getty for our basis of inspiration for our final challenge. I picked this heavy gold Roman band from A.D. 300-400. I was thrilled to set so many stones. It was fun, but a lot of work too. I estimate that it took over 30 hours to fabricate the piece.

Here is my entry for this weeks EMPRC project. We were challenged to create a piece that reminds us of our favorite places. I picked Pisgah Forest in the mountains of North Carolina for my inspiration this week. There are 5 rough garnets cemented into the bezel of this piece around the 3 long tube set faceted Garnets. I found hundreds of tiny industrial grade garnets while we were camping in Pisgah this past summer. It was lots of fun.

I did something very characteristic of my work for this challenge. I wanted the piece to feel dressy, but still be flexible enough to be worn everyday. The organic pierced and textured centerpiece contrasts with the parallel clean line boarders and tube set bezels. I'm going to make a set of earrings to go with this series too.

I completed this modern take of a Victorian bracelet for the Etsy Metal Project Runway Challenge. I choose "period piece" because I wanted to explore the Victorian open bangle style with ornamental balls. Instead of doing granulation or another embellishing technique indicative of the period, I choose to modernize this bangle with a simple bezel set gemstone.

Its called "St. John's Passion". I used an old score from Bach's "St. John's Passion" for the paper. It killed me to use a score, but this was a modern adaption by a former choir director who basically edited it and then printed out the scores at a copy shop. It was a score in progress, so there were still edits being made, so it was okay to destroy it. I used the beginning chorale and the first aria.

A "passion" is a gospel story about the crucifixion of Jesus. There are four all together written by different authors in the New testament and typically used during Lent leading up to Easter. This particular passage comes from the book of John, hence the name, St. John's Passion. Passions were very popular in Bach's time and later because during lent people refrained from going to the opera house and this was a "blblical dramatiztion", so it was acceptable. Bach wrote hundreds of church cantatas and has a little over three years of church cantatas written--one for every week.

These passions are still being performed and they are like sung mini plays. They are not acted out, but there are parts for someone to sing the Narrator often referred to as the Evangelist, Jesus, Judas, and other characters in the story. The piece is largely choral set for a typical church choir interspersed with recitatives and arias. Recitatives are the "spoken-like" sung solo passages with lots of text and the Arias are the solos for characters reflecting on their particular mood. The arias are more melodic.

My challenge for this project was to create a piece from these parameters: bracelet, bone, and Byzantine/Victorian. I knew right away that I wanted to do the Victorian style.

I did some research and this hinged style of cuff was quite the rage in the Victorian Era. Most of the pieces found were 2 styles: wide band bracelet with hinges or a wide wire with ornamental balls on the end that overlapped in the front. I used the same square wire reinforcements on the edges to add to the strength. It was fun to use my experience with antiques to help guide my work on this piece. As a young girl I helped my father with his antique business. I love the jewelry part the best!

I had Hans (my stone cutter hubby) cut a section fossilized bone for this project. He had to recut a second stone since I broke the original bone. He trimmed down another one to make it work. (Did I say how much I love my digital calipers?)

The clasp is my favorite part. Its a spring pin clasp with a spinel set into to top of the pin. There is a safety chain as well. The side where the pin lives is secured by a wire that is soldered across the tubing and goes through the pin. (I really sweated this one out!!!)

I am so grateful for Vic from Experimetal for all her hard work on this project to help motivate us to reach for higher and higher artistic goals. September 11 was such a pivital moment for me. It was like an alarm went off in my brain on multiple levels. I was a new mother and was completely content dozing in the late morning when my now ex-husband came in and told me to turn on the TV. I couldn't believe that it was real. It seemed like War of the Worlds in a surreal way. It really took a long time for me to absorb the enormity of the disaster. I was completely in shock--everything seemed to come to a complete halt. Time stopped. I cried everytime I thought of a child who lost their parents. I cried for the wives, the husbands, the mothers, the fathers and the children whose families were ripped apart. One day happy, the next day complete and utter loss. It was then the fabric of my own life began to unravel..... A few days later I first learned of my ex-husband's affairs. It was another year before I left.

Ever been walking in a garden at the end of summer and spot a neglected corner? You see in the corner the leaf from the vine that bloomed so spectacularly in the summer. Upon closer inspection the leaf is mottled with the characteristic holes left by a caterpillar. Its still beautiful though. Its almost as if the process of feeding the caterpillar has enhanced its beauty. With its missing pieces it is still functioning, it is still breathing, it is still eating. It is a brave survivor who gives a part of itself to another and does not apologize for anything.

If you haven't heard yet, my husband is making custom cabochons for me and for his etsy store. You can check out Han's store. He tries to update every few days and show you some new stones. We have nearly 100 pounds of rough and I think that will keep him out of trouble for awhile!

This photo shows some stones from my personal stash. I have set all but the top pinkish one. The bird's eye rhyolite was a housewarming gift to local metalsmith Melissa Manley. (she's amazingly talented and you can check out Melissa's work online). She also shows her work at the The Golden Gallery in the Cotton Exchange in Downtown Wilmington.

My First Piece of Metalsmithed Jewelry

I made my first piece of metalsmithed jewelry in 2006 out of copper and kyanite. Being able to cut, form, solder, and set a stone was an incredibly freeing experience for me. I still did not understand all the possibilities or limitations of the metal, but was anxious to figure them out. I began to read Tim McCreight's "Complete Metalsmith" and try to absorb what I could.

I have always wanted to do something that would have the permanence of metal. At the time, I didn't even know how to purchase silver wire or sheet. Silver was going for $8 a troy ounce. So, I got some copper sheet from a local junkyard that was originally intended to be used for flashing around the gutters on roofs. I used a kyanite bead in lieu of a proper cabochon. I learned the old fashioned way with trial and error that kyanite is a soft stone! (Note the damage at one end of the stone.) At the time Gary Pack, a local bench jeweler who "refused to teach," would let me keep him company and would answer my questions as I watched him work. I can't even really remember what I used for solder; I think I may have borrowed some silver solder palates from Gary.

I know, the necklace was quite ambitious for a first piece, but I really wanted to set stones and solder from the beginning. I was also surprised to see the bezel on the turquoise ring, because it turned out so nice for my first time setting a stone in silver. I do remember that Gary suggested filing the bezel then sanding it to get it thinner. (He was not impressed with the thick bezel on the kyanite piece). I still like clean designs. I still like working with gemstones, and I still like to mix metals. I still like feeling that there is so much more to learn and get excited knowing that there is a lifetime to perfect this art.

Ever since I first saw Maggie's hollow formed rings, I wanted to learn how to do it. I bought one from Maggie and then traded her for a second one. I was becoming addicted to these sculptural rings! I coerced Maggie into teaching me. During our family camping trip to the mountains, I had a lesson with Maggie Joynt on hollow rings. I was so excited to work on these as soon as I got home. So....I made 5. Here's one that my 8 year old daughter says that her art teacher would love to wear. She has been great with helping me crop and choose the photos to publish on the internet.

I was thrilled to see this hand-cut stone that my teacher brought today. It is a smoky quartz 14mm gemstone. Dick Desjardens is a lovely person! He is a retired doctor who has delivered over 2000 babies. Now he spends his days cutting gemstones and taking care of his wife. He is an interesting man and has done many things. I love to hear his stories.

Hans and I alternate weeks where we go and work with him in the studio. So far I'm learning to cut cabochons, but hope to get to faceting one day! I got some equipment a few months ago and have only done two stones so far. My husband loves to cut stones as well--he is much more talented than I am!

I recently cleaned and organized my studio. Now I'm back to work and I love it! It really helps me to have a clean studio. I feel that it cleans out the cobwebs out of my brain.
